Fissure Sealants for Cavity Prevention
The narrow and deep grooves on back (molar) teeth can collect plaque which the toothbrush cannot reach. These grooves or fissures are high-risk sites for dental decay.
A fissure sealant is a tooth coloured protective coating which fills and seals in children’s teeth to prevent bacteria from entering and causing decay. Applied early on after the first molar erupts into the mouth at the age of 6 years old, sealants can protect teeth at their most vulnerable time. Sometimes sealants may also be recommended to adults for high risk deep grooves that have not yet decayed.
Having fissure sealants placed is quick and painless. It usually takes a few minutes per tooth and is much less complicated than having a dental filling. To check there isn’t any decay present before we begin we may take a set of x-rays.
This procedure can be completed by one of our Dentists, Dental Hygienists or Oral Health Therapists.

Children’s Dental Care FAQs
It is recommended that your child has their first dental check up by the time they turn two. There are a number of important reasons including:
- Early detection of dental caries and other dental problems
- Small problems can be treated before they become larger issues
- Can have preventative dental treatment such as application of fluoride and dental sealants to prevent risk of dental caries
- Familiarise your child with the dental setting
Child dental care is just as important as adult dental care. Baby teeth play a big role in terms of proper eating, helps guide the adult teeth into their correct position, allows for normal development of the jaw and effects the development of speech. Furthermore, during children development self-image that healthy teeth gives is immeasurable.

What Our Patients Say About Our Children's Dental Care Services

Brilliant , had a broken tooth, extremely sore at 0700am on a Friday, not a shock that there was no answer. I took that what I thought was a long shot by contacting them on Facebook messenger. To my shock I got a message back within minutes and then got a call from Bianca booking me in at 0930am the same day. Brilliant.

I don't know if I can find any gentler friendlier more caring dentists, hygienists & receptionists anywhere else. My experience here has been great!

For many years, I have been traveling for nearly an hour from Ringwood to Bundoora Dental clinic to see my dentist, as I know he is excellent. He retired last year and I was looking for a local dentist. I was grateful to find Dr. Ron Fulop of Mitcham Dental, i did 2 filling and 1 crowning with him. Ron is a true professional who alway put patients’ health and well-being at high priority, he was good at establishing trust with patients with a good sense of humour. He has a gentle approach in his service. I would highly recommend his great service.

Mitcham Dental Clinic is honestly the best dental clinic that I've been to. Special shout-out to Sarah who is very thorough and clearly explains the work that needs to be done. I've never had an appointment where I've felt any pain (even with sensitive teeth)! The staff have a good culture and it shows in the customer experience that they provide.

Staff are fantastic and very accommodating, I didn't feel belittled or guilted at all which I have experienced at other dentists. Everything was easily explained and my concerns were taken into account. The building is clean and comfy and they go above and beyond to provide as comfortable a service as possible. I highly recommend this clinic if you're in the area.

I want to thank Dr. Ron and the Mitcham Dental Clinic team for their continued - excellent service. As someone phobic about being in the dentist chair, I’m always amazed at the caring, gentle and understanding approach I’ve been given. Professional, modern and I highly recommend this caring dental clinic to anyone, especially if you struggle with the idea of going to the dentist. This is the place for you.

I rarely make a online reviews however, after walking out the door of Mitcham Dental I immediately knew this place deserved a rave review. I've been planning to get a check up, clean, invisilign, replace fillings and have whitening done for some time. I've been putting it off as the overwhelming list of things I needed done had naturally put me off. After today, I can't believe I didn't come here sooner. I was so impressed by the friendly highly skilled staff, the attention to detail, the clarity about my dental plan and the price as well as the expertise from my Dentist. It can be daunting and expensive to have all the procedure and work one needs done on their teeth... but Mitcham Dental single handedly outshines the rest. Very impressed with this place More posts to come when all my dental work is done.
