Dental Hygiene Melbourne
When it comes to keeping your smile in the best shape, regular dental hygiene appointments are an important part of your oral health.
Without a proper clean, bacteria can build up around the gums and teeth, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and in some cases, gum disease.
Our goal is to help you stay ahead of the problem, before it becomes one. With routine visits to our oral hygienists and dental therapists, we can help keep your teeth cleaner, your gums stronger, and your mouth feeling fresh.
Why Regular Hygiene Appointments Matters For Your Smile
If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, or if your teeth feel furry by the end of the day, it might be time to book in with a dental hygienist. Our oral hygienists and dentists are trained to clean those hard-to-reach spots that your toothbrush can’t always get to.
Benefits of Seeing a Dental Hygienist
It’s more than just a quick polish. Seeing a dental hygienist is one of the easiest ways to keep your smile looking (and feeling) amazing. Here’s what’s in it for you:
- Early gum disease detection – Spot and treat inflammation or gingivitis before it worsens.
- A deeper clean – Remove plaque and tartar from areas your toothbrush misses.
- Stain removal – Lift surface stains from coffee, tea, wine or smoking.
- Tailored advice – Get tips on brushing, flossing, and oral care routines.
- Support during treatment – Maintain gum health while wearing braces or aligners.
- Fresher breath – Reduce bacteria build-up and boost your confidence.

Dental Hygiene FAQs
Oral hygiene helps prevent dental caries (tooth decay) and gum disease like gingivitis and periodontitis. The goal is to keep your teeth and gums healthy so they last a lifetime.
- Early Detection of Gum Disease
Your team is trained to spot early signs of gum inflammation, gingivitis and more advanced periodontal disease. Regular visits help treat issues before they become painful or expensive.
- A Deeper Clean Than You Can Do at Home
Even with daily brushing and flossing, plaque can build up in hard-to-reach areas. A visit to Mitcham Dental means those hidden spots get a proper clean, leaving your teeth smoother and your breath fresher.
- Professional Stain Removal
If your smile’s looking a little dull thanks to coffee, tea, red wine or smoking, a clean from a dental hygienist can lift stubborn surface stains and help your teeth look brighter.
- Personalised Oral Hygiene Advice
Not sure if you’re brushing correctly? Wondering what type of toothbrush or floss to use? Your dental hygienist will give you tailored advice to improve your daily routine and prevent future problems.
- Support for Orthodontics and Other Treatments
If you're wearing braces or aligners, seeing an oral hygienist helps maintain oral health while undergoing treatment. We’ll work with you to protect your teeth and gums throughout your treatment!
- Fresher Breath and More Confidence
Bacteria build-up is one of the most common causes of bad breath. Regular cleans remove that build-up and help you feel more confident speaking, smiling and laughing.
We recommend wetting your toothbrush and toothpaste before brushing, room temperature is best. But most importantly, spit, don’t rinse! That way, all the good stuff from the toothpaste stays on your teeth longer.
Your hygiene appointment includes:
- A professional clean and polish
- Fluoride application
- Personalised oral health advice
We also offer EMS Airflow Polish (Prophy Jet) — a high-tech clean ideal for stains and orthodontics.
The EMS Airflow Polish (also known as the Prophy Jet) is a high-tech, gentle cleaning system that lifts away stains and plaque using a stream of air, warm water (set to your comfort level), and fine polishing powder.
It’s especially great for:
- Patients with braces or orthodontic appliances
- Anyone prone to heavy staining
- Those who want a super smooth, polished feel after their clean
- Brush for 2 minutes twice a day (morning and night)
- Use a fluoride toothpaste
- Spit, don’t rinse
- Floss or use interdental brushes (like Piksters) before brushing at night
We recommend visiting our oral hygienists every 6 months, or more often if you’ve been prone to gum issues in the past.

Brilliant , had a broken tooth, extremely sore at 0700am on a Friday, not a shock that there was no answer. I took that what I thought was a long shot by contacting them on Facebook messenger. To my shock I got a message back within minutes and then got a call from Bianca booking me in at 0930am the same day. Brilliant.

I very rarely leave reviews, but this is warranted. I’m a very nervous patient when it comes to sitting in a dental chair, however from the moment I walked in to make an appointment and explained my situation I was made to feel relaxed. Dr Jia Leong made the experience actually quite enjoyable. She is very thorough, patient and professional. This is a very modern, fully equipped dental surgery you should not look past. And again, if you are nervous, Dr Leong and Mitcham dental clinic is the clinic for you.
